Situational Learning Example

Delivery Driver

For a recent job interview, I was asked to create a presentation using Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate on a topic of my choice. The organization works in logistics, so I decided to create a situational learning experience for a delivery driver. Below you will find a link to the presentation and my reasoning behind the design. This presentation was developed using Articulate Storyline 360.

This presentation would be used as part of the evaluation section of a training module for delivery drivers. A situational question was created to test the learner’s knowledge in a scenario that could be real.

As the organization is located in the Greater Toronto Area, and the Toronto Maple Leafs making the finals is a regular joke, I decided to use this humour to lighten the mood for the learner. Whenever possible, I try to lighten the mood for the learner so that the material doesn’t feel like information overload.

I decided not to use a multiple choice questionnaire as I wanted the learner to have the opportunity to fully understand the reasoning behind the choices they were making. I find that learners will often skip to the next question without fully understanding why their answer was right or wrong. This way, the learner cannot move forward until the right decision has been made.

As I was doing a live presentation, I opted out on using voiceover. In general, I would opt out on using voiceover during testing as this can distract the learner, raising the possibility of error. I also removed the side menu and the arrow forward and backward buttons in order to give the learner an opportunity to answer without skipping ahead.

In terms of design, I stuck with the company’s brand colours in order to keep consistency with their branding. I also placed the learner in an environment in which they work in, that of a truck and warehouse, to make the scenario relatable to their profession. As I was using a free trial version of Articulate Storyline at the time, I was limited with my choice of characters, thus the outfits might not be as realistic as with another character from the paid version.
